Gelephu

Gelephu, one of the key towns and administrative hubs in Sarpang Dzongkhag, lies in the southern part of Bhutan bordering the Indian state of Assam. Strategically located along one of the country’s major trade routes, Gelephu serves as a vital economic and commercial center. The town is well-connected by road and also hosts one of Bhutan’s domestic airports, facilitating easier travel and trade. Its warm and humid climate supports the cultivation of a variety of crops including citrus fruits, ginger, and cardamom, making agriculture and commerce the backbone of the local economy.

Brief Background of the Gewog:

In addition to its economic significance, Gelephu is also known for its rich cultural heritage and social development. The town hosts a diverse population and serves as the headquarters for several regional government offices and institutions. With growing urbanization, Gelephu is witnessing rapid infrastructure development such as roads, housing, healthcare, and educational facilities. The proposed Gelephu Mindfulness City is expected to further transform the region into a model for balanced development rooted in Bhutan’s values of sustainability, spirituality, and Gross National Happiness.
