Gakiling

Gakiling Gewog, located in Sarpang Dzongkhag, is one of the remotest gewogs in the southern belt of Bhutan. The gewog shares its border with Haa Dzongkhag in the north and India in the south, making it strategically significant yet geographically challenging. With lush subtropical forests, the area is known for its rich biodiversity and natural beauty. Due to its terrain, some chiwogs remain difficult to access, especially during monsoon seasons. The people of Gakiling mainly depend on subsistence farming, growing maize, rice, and vegetables, while also rearing livestock.

Brief Background of the Gewog:

Administratively, the gewog comprises several chiwogs such as Singye, Jigme, and Dophulhaka. Development efforts are ongoing to improve road connectivity, education, and health services in the area. The gewog has a Basic Health Unit (BHU) and several primary schools that cater to the scattered settlements. The introduction of power tillers, irrigation schemes, and farm roads has helped improve agricultural productivity. Despite the geographical hardships, the people of Gakiling maintain a strong sense of community and continue to preserve their unique cultural identity.
