Livestock

The Livestock sector in Sarpang Dzongkhag plays a vital role in enhancing rural livelihoods and food security. With a largely agrarian population, livestock farming provides a reliable source of income, nutrition, and employment for many households. The dzongkhag supports a wide range of livestock development programs including dairy, poultry, piggery, and goat farming.

Background

In addition to economic benefits, the sector contributes significantly to national food self-sufficiency goals. With the growing demand for animal products, the dzongkhag continues to encourage semi-commercial and commercial farming practices. Efforts are being made to control animal diseases through vaccination campaigns and regular health check-ups. The livestock sector also aligns with climate-resilient farming practices, integrating pasture management and waste recycling systems. As part of integrated farming systems, livestock is essential to sustainable rural development in Sarpang, providing synergy with agriculture and ensuring holistic growth in the dzongkhag’s rural economy.

Mandates

  1. To plan, coordinate and implement the livestock production and animal health activities as per the policies, strategies and guidelines of the Dzongkhag
  2. To develop the capacity of rural community and extension personnel.
  3. Mobilize resources for implementation of livestock development activities in the Dzongkhag.
  4. Build and enhance human resource capacity of all levels for efficient service delivery
  5. Encourage youths and private sector involvement in livestock enterprise development.
