Economic Development
Sarpang Dzongkhag has witnessed significant economic growth driven by its strategic location, natural resources, and diversified economic activities. Agriculture remains the backbone of the local economy, with the majority of residents engaged in farming activities such as paddy cultivation, maize, vegetables, and cash crops. The dzongkhag’s fertile land and favorable climate support high agricultural productivity, contributing to food security and income generation for rural households. Additionally, livestock farming and small-scale agro-based industries complement agricultural activities, providing employment and enhancing livelihoods.
Background
In recent years, Sarpang has also seen growth in trade and commerce, particularly due to its proximity to the Indian border and the presence of Gelephu as a commercial hub. The dzongkhag benefits from cross-border trade, transportation, and the development of markets that stimulate local entrepreneurship. Infrastructure improvements, such as road connectivity and communication networks, have further boosted economic opportunities. The government and private sector continue to collaborate on initiatives aimed at industrial development, tourism promotion, and value addition to local products, which are expected to diversify and strengthen the economic base of Sarpang in the coming years.
