Jigmechoeling Dratshang

Jigmechoeling Dratshang is an important out‑station of Sarpang Rabdey, serving the spiritual needs of communities in and around Jigmechoeling Gewog in southern Bhutan. Situated on a gentle ridge overlooking fertile lowland farms, the dratshang provides a quiet environment where monks pursue the study of Buddhist scriptures, ritual practice, and meditation in the Drukpa Kagyü tradition. Daily liturgies—including morning and evening prayers, Tara and Guru Rinpoche practices, and protective‐deity rituals—form the backbone of monastic life, while senior monks mentor novices in recitation, tsepdro (liturgical chanting), and basic monastic discipline.

Beyond its internal routines, Jigmechoeling Dratshang anchors the religious calendar for nearby villages. It organizes annual lochos and tshechus, conducts rimdros for crops, livestock, and household prosperity, and offers rites for life‑cycle events such as naming ceremonies, funerals, and consecrations of new homes. During auspicious periods (particularly the fourth and ninth Bhutanese months), residents hike up to the dratshang with offerings of rice, fruits, and butter lamps, strengthening communal ties and reinforcing Bhutan’s living heritage of mutual support between laity and sangha. By preserving ritual knowledge, providing moral guidance, and fostering inter‑village solidarity, Jigmechoeling Dratshang remains a vital pillar of both spiritual and cultural life in Sarpang Dzongkhag.

The chorten not only serves religious purposes but also holds historical and cultural value for the community. It is believed to have been built to subdue negative energies and promote harmony in the region. Locals often visit the site to offer butter lamps and circumambulate the stupa, especially during auspicious days. The annual “Monlam Chenmo” prayer ceremony conducted at the chorten is a major spiritual event, attracting lamas and laypeople alike. Surrounded by natural beauty, Monlem Gangtap Chorten continues to be a place of deep devotion and spiritual renewal.
